We are so excited for Yorkton’s annual Film Festival to return this May! If you’re planning a trip to Yorkton this Spring, we highly recommend experiencing this awesome event that everyone in and around town has looked forward to every year since 1947. That’s right, the Yorkton Film Festival will turn 71 years old this year, making it one of North America’s longest running film festivals.
This year’s events begin on Thursday May 25th with the opening night screening of Rumble: The Indians who Rocked the World at the Painted Hand Casino. This film tells the story of how Indigenous people and culture influenced American music. This will be followed by screenings of Talking At Night, a look into Saskatoon’s Mobile Crisis Unit which provides round the clock crisis resolution to people in distress; To Wake Up the Nakota Language, a feature on Armand McArthur, the last fluent Nakota speaker in Pheasant Rump First Nation, whose mission is to preserve the language by teaching Nakota to his community; and Ride, a look into the life of Liam Marshall who is a regular teenager during the week and a bareback rodeo rider on the weekends.
On Friday May 25th, be sure to check out the Yorkton Lion’s Lobsterfest, now an iconic part of the Yorkton Film Festival. While the focus of the festival is surely the films, it’s great fun to experience an evening of a delicious lobster dinner plus some good old skeet shooting with the community. Steak and vegetarian meals are also available, so everyone can partake in the fun!
Other awesome events during the Film Festival include the Awards Gala on Saturday May 26th, which includes a gourmet dinner and a presentation of this year’s Golden Sheaf Award winners. There are of course also non-stop film screenings from Friday to Sunday, plus panels with industry experts to round off this fun and thought-provoking event. A full program of screenings and panels will be announced closer to the festival date.
May 24th may seem like a world away, but you don’t want to miss your chance to check out this amazing local event - so start planning your visit now! It’s never to early to book your stay with us so we can share the magic of the Yorkton Film Festival with you!
